    Irregular heartbeat in unborn child
I am nine weeks pregnant and just had an ultrasound done. My baby is the same size it was at 5 weeks and hasn't grown in the past 2 weeks. When checking the heartbeat they noticed that it is very irregular. It will beat three times, than pause for a second or two, then beat three times again and pauses. I am really worried and don't know what to do to avoid a miscarriage. If anyone knows anything please help me!!

Unfortunately, if you are going to have a miscarriage, there really isn't anything you can do to prevent it. If it is going to happen, then that means there is something wrong and your body feels it is unhealthy for you to continue to carry this baby.

An irregular heartbeat does not mean you are going to have a miscarriage. I am going to provide you a link, stating that in some cases this corrects itself, or can be corrected through medication prescribed to you.

My daughters heart beat has been iregular from when I was carrying her till now they will operate in three years if it doesn't correct itself.
Try not to get upset its actually quite common talk to you dr and have them explain it all to you after all that's what they are there for.
Edit** my daughter was slow growing and it wasn't picked until 12 weeks she was born prem and exceptionally small but everything worked and she is a cracking two year old now with a wonderful personality.
Don't be afraid fishing on the internet will just scare you rigid talk to your dr and get the real low down they are the ones that will give you the facts.

I also wanted to give you this information on your baby's slow growth : Women's Health Advisor 2005.4: Intrauterine Growth Retardation (Slowed Growth of Baby)

I am not saying this is what's wrong, but it does give you some causes, symptoms, and things you can do to help. :)

I must tell you that I had the same problem well maybe not the same but my daughter had an irregular heartbeat at about the same time as you 9 weeks! My doctor sent me to a bigger town with better technology for a heart specialist and an ultrasonics's so they could check the babies heart before it was born and the heart specialist told me that everything was fine except the beat and told me that either the heartbeat would stay like that when she was born and we would deal with it when she was older or it would go away before she was born or it would go away right when she was born well in my case thank the good Lord above her heartbeat was regular directly after birth!!

So the point of my story is that you need to ask and get answers from your doctor and demand to be referred to a heart specialist for the baby they can get in there and see EVERYTHING just with an ultrasound they can see all the valves to the heart and everything and it would either give you a heads up of what to expect or will put your mind at ease!! If your doctor is not willing to give you more information then I would find a new doctor!!

Please let me know what happens!! This happened to me with my first child and at the time I was terrified but then the hart specialist really made me feel better and explained everything to me in terms I could understand!!

Sorry CBW, had to spread the love. But yes, fishing around on the internet will most likely give you false, and quite frankly, frightening information.

CBW is absolutely correct. You need to discuss this with your doctor and no one else.

What you will get here are people's experiences, and they may not relate to your situation at all.

Please get the advice straight from your doctor.

Yes like I said Doctor and if you can't get anywhere with your doctor get a new one or demand to see a heart specialist for your baby my doctor ordered this just to be on the safe side yours should do the same thing!!

Make sure if you go full term, as soon as it is possible get that baby out. I had a friend that went full term on her pregnancy and because the baby's heart beat was irregular the doctor waited about 2-4 weeks more, that is 10 months... when he finally decided to get the baby out... the baby died. I hope that you have better luck... Good luck with that baby, just keep your hopes up and pray to god that your baby will be okay.

I have never been so shocked in my life do you not think that this young lady is scared witless as it is she really doesn't need the kind of advice your offering.
What you are describing is very rare and incredibly unlikely I'm sorry it happened to your friend I really am but any decent dr will do all they can I saw a lot of other women with the same thing while I was carrying my daughter and he treated us all extreamly well and did all he could for both myself and my daughter.

To the OP : There was concern that something was wrong with my second son's size, so I was sent to a specialist. You might want to talk to your doctor about doing the same. At one point in my pregnancy my son was about 4 weeks below what he needed to be. It scared me to no end, but they reassured me that sometimes the problem corrects itself, and it did. He was born 6 lbs. 15 oz. when it was projected that he would be born around 4 1/2 lbs. There are more problems with pregnancy than you can imagine. Not everyone goes through a 100% worry free pregnancy. But in the end, when your baby is born, and you hold him, all of those worries that you had while he was in your tummy seem to disappear.

adriana1318 : I am not going to give you a disagree for stating your own experience through your friend, but next time please remember the feelings of others. The OP is really worried, and needs reassuring words, not rare cases that will scare her even further.

Do NOT let this person scare you!! I told you my story about going through the same thing and when I had my daughter c-section (not because of her heart because I was induced 3 times and nothing happened) she came out fine they hooked her up to an EKG machine and her heart was beating normal and guess what I was 20 days past my due date!! And my daughter is small for her age now but not abnormal and when she was born she weighed 7lbs 14oz and was 21 1/4 inches long!! DO NOT LET THESE PEOPLE SCARE YOU JUST GO SEE YOUR DOCTOR AND PLEASE LET US KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON!!
