    a/c leak, how to locate?
    Hi,
I had a local A/C company come out and see why my unit wasn't cooling. I had already replace the filter, as I knew if it was dirty, the unit could ice up and not cool. They cleaned the coils (which I don't think was a problem) and put 2# of freon in. 3 weeks later the house was not cooling, so I called them back. They said I had a leak, put 2 more pounds of freon in and told me they would have to come back out to do a leak search for $205. I spent $200 the first time and $150 yesterday and I don't think they have told me anything I didn't already know.
I want to know how to preform the leak check myself and if possible, get the R-22 and fill it myself. I know I probably can't buy it, but at least I can direct someone to where the leak is and save some money.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You will not be able to purchase or add refreigerat unless you are certified. You can lookk for a leak. Many times they are in condenser or evaparator. You can also check whever you have a brazed joint. Check with electronic leak detector or soap bubbles. Hard to find leak , I recover refergerant, add nitrogen for pressure and hunt the leak down. Many leaks can be difficult to lacate, but it sounds like you are losing quickly so shouldn't be to hard to locate. Your service tech should insist on finding leak instead of contiuing to add ref. Good Luck

Also look at joints and feel if is oily. This would be a leak
