NJ Resident with NYC job - Taxes?
I recently was offered a new job in NYC. Currently I work in NJ. How do I figure out what is a comparable salary in NYC since I would have to pay NJ, NYC, and NY State taxes so that my take home pay is at minimum the same.

Currently I make about $55,000 in NJ. What would my NYC salary need to be at minimum to take some the same pay?

    Ilustrtor:

The NY state tax rate is higher than NJ. Since NJ offers a credit for taxes paid to NY, your NJ tax bill will probably be zero.

I would expect you would pay somewhere between $1,000-$2,500 more in taxes to NY state. However, you will pay zero taxes to NY City unless you move into the NYC limits. If you commute from NJ, you have NO NYC tax liability.

Factor in the costs of commuting plus the cost of lunch and an occasional dinner in NYC when you decide how much more you need to make in NYC.
