I have used the non-permanent hair colors off and on for a couple of years and haven't had any major issues with them. But I recently tried one that was suppose to be near my natural color (just to cover up some grays). I wasn't thrilled with it (it was actually too light) but it was OK (I didn't want to put a bag on my head at any rate). After a month, I decided to "be good to myself" and have my hair colored at a salon and have them help pull the brassy/transparent color (mostly on my ends) out and put it all back to the medium-ash-non-red-blond that I am/was.

I don't know very much about hair coloring so I thought this would be the best thing. NOT! I don't know what this girl was thinking - and she came recommended for her "coloring skills" - but I have RED roots and DARK Auburn hair! I know she used a 2-step process but the more she tried to "fix" it the darker it got. NOW I want to put the bag on my head! She told me my hair was "pulling" the red but I don't have any red in my hair naturally! I didn't understand how my hair went from light brassy blond to dark auburn when all I wanted was the brass toned down. I thought the worst case would be my hair would turn green, but it's red - and the hair dresser actually told me that red was better than green, now wasn't it? (UUGGH!)

My question is - If I try Prell or some other home remedy on my hair, will it start turning redder as it lightens? I am afraid a peroxide mix will just turn my hair orange. If the risk is minimal, which "remedy" would be the best? I have fine hair and it isn't very damaged but I am very afraid of going back to a salon and having them strip my hair. I am willing to try anything at this point, I just want to know what could happen so I am not traumatized again!

Depending on when you dyed your hair, liquid dish soap will tone it down, if its been too long you need to go to a DIFFERENT salon. Get one recommended by one of your friends. You also should go get your money back from the person who died your hair to begin with, she didn't give you what you asked for.

If you want to go from dark auburn to ash blonde, you will need to lighten your hair with bleach (hydrogen peroxide) to a yellow stage and then apply the desired color. Anything other than that will result in brassy or unpleasant shade. You should consider going back to the salon and have them correct the color. Explain to the salon manager that you're not happy with the results and he/she will appoint another stylist to fix your hair.

Thank you for your response. I tried the Prell, I put a ton of it on dry hair and left it on for about an hour and it took the red tone out and softened the colour. I am afraid to do much more until I see "my girl" who has returned to my area and opened her own salon (thank goodness). As for the other place, they are going to give me a refund because I got to this point after asking them to "fix" the colour they messed up the first time - I got auburn after I ask them to fix the initial Red they put in my hair in the first place. Talk about a cover up! OH WELL, live and learn, I went to this place because a friend goes there and loves it - sometimes your friends can steer you a little astray! :eek: :)
