Having Trouble Identifing 79 Dodge Engine
Hi, hope someone can help. I just bought a 1979 Dodge Sportsman/Grand Slam RV. It is built on a van chassis/body and I can't find anything telling me what size the engine is. It runs good, but I need to know what the engine is so I can order parts, etc. for tune ups. I have tried to figure it out from the VIN, but it is confusing, partly because it is an RV and the VIN makes no sense to me when I compare it to Dodge VIN codes. I think it is a 360,but I am not sure which 360 it is, the 2 bbl or the 4bbl. Please help! Thanks in advance!!

Any dodge dealers around you, if they have some sense, they should be able to tell you, also engine liters will give them something to go on.

The 2 barrel or 4 barrel is easy enough. Just remove the air cleaner. You should be able to see 2 or 4 holes going into the carburator. There is also a chassis number you will need when buying some non engine parts. When I worked at a brake shop, people would come in to buy parts and not be able to tell us anything except it was a Dodge chassis. Dodge builds a number of them, and they all take different parts.

If you crawl under the RV on the driver's side look at the side of the engine block behind the exhaust manifold. You will see several numbers starting near the front of the block and progressing towards the rear. There will be a gap in the numbers towards the rear. There will be the numbers "318" or "360" followed by 1 more more digit (I am guessing the number "3"). The "318" or "360" indicates which cubic inch motor you have. If you remove the air cleaner and look down into the carb, you will see 2 holes entering the intake manifold (2 barrel) or 4 holes entering the intake manifold (4 barrel).
