TUB water shut off handle installation
HELP! I need to install handles on water supply shut-offs for the tub before I can sell my place - buyers insist. There are two small bits of pipe sticking out from the wall in the closet in front of the tub. They are straight, about 2 inches, have square ends, heavily painted over. Previous owner left one of those round, flower-like handles hanging over the pipe but it doesn't seem to fit properly and just strips the metal when I try using it. What do I need to do? Remove paint? Is there a screw notched hidden under the paint on the square part??

Inspect the stem shaft and see if it matches the handle hole. Old ones were square so make sure yours match.
