If the hot and neutral are reversed, the GFI will still work. However, the black wire should be hot and connected to the brass terminal on any device, and the white wire should be on the silver terminal and be neutral.
Best to use a volt meter to confirm the hot and neutral and correct as necessary. |

How do you install GFCI Recepticles properly with old wiring in a house?
Is there ever a situation where it makes sense to have a GFCI outlet on the same circuit as a GFCI breaker? Will having a GFCI outlet on the same circuit as a GFCI breaker cause any damage? I recently bought a house and found the situation noted above.
