About Social Security & Medicare Withholdings?
    Hi.
I am an F-1 student in my 4th year in the US. I am working under CPT for an off-campus company. The social security and Medicare taxes were withheld from my last month's pay check. So I talked to the company secretary and told her that I should be exempt from those withholdings. I also gave her the link to Pub. 519 on the IRS website. Later she told me that she had informed the payroll guy about this issue and he was looking into it, but he was not sure how to "flag" me on the form my company files to the IRS (940 or 941, I am not sure) so that they can stop withholding those taxes from my pay without getting into trouble. I wonder if anyone here has similar experience, and how this issue can be resolved on the paperwork technically. Any advice will be appreciated. Thank you. :D

    PJFry:

Your company needs only identify you as an "exempt individual" on their report to the IRS.

Since you identified the problem early, rectifying it should not be a problem, though it might take several paychecks before you get the withholding back.

There is no FORM per se. You just let your employer know that you are exempt from the FICA taxes.
