    Supporting wall?
    Hi,

    Ive just moved into a house and I want to knock the wall down between my dining room and kitchen.Is there a easy way of telling if it is a supporting wall?

    If you can get into the attic or basement you will see your support walls have a pillar or support uder them in the basement.

    Check to see which way the joists run in the ceiling above the wall in question. If they run perpendicular to the wall, you have a problem. If they run parallel, you're OK.

    Also, usually (not always) if the kitchen and/or DR is significantly shorter in one dimension than the other, the joists probably run the short way. This isn't always true, so y need to check, but it may give you a hint.
