    Gas water heater
I had my water turned off for a few days then had it turned back on, now there is no hot water coming from the heater. All valves are open but still nothing comes out, why?

The cold water comes out fine, and I know the tank is full. The strange thing is that when I open one of the hot water taps and turn on the cold water on another, cold water comes out of the hot tap I have open. The gas is operating fine

The burner is on, there's hot water in the tank but only cold water coming out of the hot tap? No hot water at all? Not even warm? Why was your water off for a few days? Any work done on your plumbing during that time?
What am I missing here? Regard, Tom

The water was turned off because I couldn't pay the bill on time. When it was turned back on nothing came out of the hot water side of any of the faucets. I believe that the cold water is coming out because it is backing up through the pipes through the hot side. Could my hot water line be clogged, or do I need to prime something? I am at a loss here. I can hear the cold water entering the tank and when I open the relief valve, I can hear water coming through it too. Also water does come out of the drain at the bottom of the tank when I open it. It seems like the hot water just isn't going from the tank to the faucets. Both the cold water supply and the hot water out is open at the top of the heater. When I turn on the hot water at the faucets water comes out but only for a few seconds.

Do you have heat trap nipples installed on the heater? Is the tank hot to the touch? How old is the heater? The house? Is there a shut off on the hot water outlet of the heater? Back to you. Tom

I don't have any idea what a heat trap nipple is, so I caouldnt tell you if it has them . It is warm to the touch and yes the hot water outlet valve is open supplying hot water to the taps. It is a fairly old heater. The house is also pretty old.

A heat trap nipple is installed on newer heaters so I don't believe you have one. Has any work been done on your water system lately? It just doesn't make sense that turnung off and back on the cold water supply would prevent the heater from working. I got to be missing something here. Regards, Tom
