I was recently diagnosed with PCOS and have a Dr. appointment tomorrow. They are going to do an ultrasound and are going to start me on a medication to jump start my periods again. I am trying desperately to lose weight as I hear that that helps and now I am at an even greater risk of heart disease. But, are there any important questions that I should ask my dr. when I go tomorrow? Does anyone know of any good books for PCOS? What about the chances for conceiving?

I too have pcos. First off cysts on the ovaries does not make or brake a pcos diagnosis. Purchase a book called the Sugar Solution. Start a diet like the south beach diet. Atkins is not recommended as it is too high in fat and cholesterol. They will probably give you a hormone pills to kick start your period, take as directed. Metformin is the current med of choice by pcos patients. Patients start weight reduction with diet and exercise and when one reaches 1500 mil. Of metformin. I am at 200 mg. and it took a long time to reach that point after several starts and stops. The meds cause stomach upset and nausea, but go away after some time. Since dec. I have lost between 50-55 lbs, no longer pre diabetic and have cut significantly my risk of heart attack and stroke. Best of luck.

I am not sure if I am insulin resistant yet, but the research that I have done I believe that I am. The thing that scares me the most is the idea that I won't be able to conceive and I want a baby so bad. But, DanielNoahsmommy... I take it you are a mommy, so it worked for you?

I am a mommy, but I got pcos after my child was born. Your endocronologist will probably give you meds to stimulate ovulation and egg production. First off get your med. Condition under control. A new baby needs a healthy mom first and foremost. PCOS main characteristic is the inability to metabolize sugar. Start metformin, begin south beach diet and begin to excersize, be aware that it may take some time for metformin to kick in. you must be dilligent in your diet and exercise.

He may give you meds now to get pregnant. But I would wait till health risks go down for hbp, stroke, heart attack and death. That's just my opinion!

I've had PCOS for about 35 years. :( My success was with the Atkins diet. But any reduced carb or low carb diet should help. Ask your doctor which one would be best for you.

It took me 10 years of regular trying, and one year of trying with a fertility doctor, before I was able to conceive. But once I had a child my periods became very regular and some of the symptoms of PCOS were reduced.

I've been on 1500 mg Metformin for about a year now. It was prescribed by my endocrinologist and I need to see her once a year for bloodwork. But be aware that Metformin is not likely to work for you if you don't stick to a low carb or reduced carb diet. It works best when you take it while dieting, not in place of dieting.
