I'm doing some solar hot water installations which involve a lot of plumbing - tanks, heat exchangers, solar collectors, valves, temp gauges, etc. Some solar contractors I know like to use "green stuff" pipe dope, whereas regular plumbers seem to prefer teflon tape.

Stories I've heard include that you shouldn't use pipe dope on potable connections; that teflon tape isn't recommended for high temperature (temps can exceed 300F at solar collector outlets); teflon tape if installed sloppily can partially block flow.

Any wisdom on the subject? I've been using green stuff with good results.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I prefer Lock-tite PST. If the green stuff works for you, continue with it.

I once managed a small factory heavy on oil lines. Teflon tape didn't do the job.
