As far as I know, all breeds of dogs average 63 days.

You need is not a little counseling, but a major learning experience. Breeding dogs is a serious responsibility, and it sounds like you have shirked yours. How can you have a female half way through her pregnancy and not done enough reading to know basics like the gestation period? The shy Maltese in another question may have been bred by somebody that didn't know the importance of early socialization of puppies. How carefully did you check both her and the stud for problems? Were both from lines free of health and temperament problems? If we fail to select the very best as breeding stock, we will not produce quality dogs. There is much more to quality then conformation to breed standards. American Kennel Club - akc.org discusses responsible breeding, but puts too much emphasis on show quality. For a broader prospective on breeding, see Woodhaven Labradors Articles For a different view, see Petfinder.com: Adopt a pet and help an animal shelter rescue a puppy or kitten. It is not about breeding, but the millions of dogs that will be slaughtered if the good people there can't find homes for them.

If I am a little short, it is because your question suggests you are one more contributing to the misery from poor breeding practices. I see questions like your every day on another site, and it tears my heart out to think of all the unwanted dogs dying. Every dog Q&A site is filled with questions with people struggling with poorly bred dogs.

Katheleen I will have to agree with everything labman said. But I want to add to that You don't know what is going to happen with these puppies once they leave your care. Whether you are selling them for a profit or giving them away .Are you going to follow up and make sure that they are spayed/neutered once they leave your home. Are you going to ask for vet references when choosing a home for your puppies. Will you visit their homes to ensure that it is a safe place for your puppy... fenced yard/ young children, other pets and their condition etc. all of these things must be taken into consideration when they are going to a new home. I hope that you understand that these are living breathing little creatures that need our protection. We as human beings possess the power to make their lives filled with happiness or lived in hell. Since she is already pregnant and it is apparent that you failed to educate yourself on this matter. Make sure you do right by these babies and find them good responsible owners. Don't mistake that if someone is willing to pay a couple of hundred dollars for a pup that, that alone will make them a good pet owner. Go to pet finder. Com and type in daschund and find out how many were thrown away. You may also Google up daschund rescue and find 1000's of more. I hope that you do not get angry over our post and you see this as people that truly love animals and are concerned for their welfare. :)
