K I hate to change the topic, but I am watching the news, and this woman is on here totally appalled because they are teaching her daughter, who is in grade three, about same sex marriages.
She isn't upset because they are explaining the different types of family units, she is upset, because they are going so far as talking about how gay men are at a higher risk of contracting HIV!! Wow, a little tense for grade three don't you think?

Agreed, in a way its like child abuse, they will learn about that kind of thing when they are closer to being ready, but at such a young age, it really is stupid

I completely agree with teaching kids that not all families are a mommy and a daddy and 2.5 kids. It's something children NEED to know.
They do NOT need to be told that gay men get aids and die. That's exactly how it translates for a 3rd grader. They're told that gay men run a higher risk of getting hiv, and they hear that all gay men get aids and die. It's just too subtle a difference for them to completely understand at that age.
Go ahead. Teach them about all the different kinds of families and that ALL families are good and deserve respect and love. Teach them understanding and acceptance. Do NOT teach them that one demographic gets sick just because of who they are.

I want to know if they realize what that will do to all the little boys who, in a few years, suddenly realize that their bodies react to other little boys. They are going to have a voice in their heads telling them that they're going to get aids and die. It's not going to be connected with unprotected sex. In their young minds, being a gay male causes hiv. Nothing else.
It doesn't MATTER what they learn later. The thing that will stick with them is the first thing they learned. That being gay will kill them. They probably won't even realize that the thought is there. They'll probably just feel like being gay is sick. They may never connect it to that lesson they had in school when they were little, but the connection will still be there.
It's already hard enough to realize you're gay in today's world. They don't need any added stigma. What they need, is to grow up in a world that doesn't see race, religion, heritage, income, or gender. Since that isn't going to happen, they need to grow up without anyone telling them that one group is any less healthy or deserving or special or equal than any other.
Things like that just make me want to smack someone.

That is exactly what the world is, it's just not going to happen.
Try explaining alcoholism to the country folks, or bipolar disorder to a group of construction workers.
The world just isn't an accepting place.

As long as you come back, you can vanish for a few days. Vanish for good and we'll hunt you down. That's a promise. ;)
