I don't know about "cannot" have a place. Their place is not very significant due to their lack of impact on the business paradigm, yet they are important in both maintaining quality and improving volume. Don't fall into the trap of equating significance with importance.

The innovative ones also go bankrupt very spectacularly.

I agree and I wouldn't say that they are not innovative either. They may not have the massive funding for R & D however a lot of new inventions and innovative changes have come from small business also. I know that you are not looking for good reasons for small business but small business is a growth 'market' in this country and has been for some time. Many times due to being small the owners of these companies have to use their resources in more effectively and productively.

Hey, I'm tryin' to help the guy out here.

My original examples started small but had an innovative business model that allowed for rapid growth. Ford Motors is another one. The big businesses with a history of innovation are the ones that change the entire concept of business. You and I and the millions of other small businesses are the ones that keep the wheels turning but we're not going to turn the wheels sideways to make hovercraft.

If I say there are small businesses like hawkers in roads which make a lot of noise and block the roads, do you think that is a 'good' point?


Or can I for example place more emphasis on the 'modern business', and say like "all modern business need to grow and we cannot afford having many small firms"?

Well, not really an assignment. Our teacher asked half the class to look for the +ves and the other half to look for -ves, along with examples. I'm already struggling with the arguments... I think I'll need to go the other way round like suggested Stringer, that is looking for small firms, and what they do. I'll need to give it a try.

Hmm, I saw on a site that a small business is one which does not exceed 100 employees... but I cannot recall anything else. :o

A Ha! Here's an approach you can use. Small businesses either have a good idea and grow into big business, like Ford or McDonald's or Wal-mart, or they do not have new ideas and either plod along or fold up. Those that plod along provide jobs but not much else. Those that fold up provide headlines.

Yes, I mean news headlines, primarily about unemployment statistics and tax revenues and Bankruptcy filings. I don't mean individual companies making headlines.

I know of lots, but they're so small your teacher will never have heard of them.

One plodder I can think of has made the news as an example of Barbecue is the Skylight Inn close by me.
