All of the people mentioned in Starman's quote were righteous in God's eyes. The Lord doesn't instruct, appear or prophesy to or through unrighteous people. God proved himself to those people. Made covenants with them. They didn't question whether it was or wasn't God. First and foremost they believed that God was a good God. It wouldn't be instruction from a demon. Think about it. They also learned (unintentionally) to recognize God's voice. Anything else would require discernment of spirits, and they probably had that too. The Lord equipped them with the Good One so I don't think the other was a problem , considering the faith that they had.
