All of the people mentioned in Starman's quote were righteous in God's eyes. The Lord doesn't instruct, appear or prophesy to or through unrighteous people. God proved himself to those people. Made covenants with them. They didn't question whether it was or wasn't God. First and foremost they believed that God was a good God. It wouldn't be instruction from a demon. Think about it. They also learned (unintentionally) to recognize God's voice. Anything else would require discernment of spirits, and they probably had that too. The Lord equipped them with the Good One so I don't think the other was a problem , considering the faith that they had.

How would you know that the 'confirmation' that is was God's voice you heard was actually from God and not from a deceiving spirit?

Good point! I immediately saw the fallacious reasoning but for some reason overlooked modifying the response. You are 100% correct. The voice might be from a deceiving spirit. The best thing to do under present circumstances is simply to accept the Word of God as his message for mankind and not go beyond that. Thanks for pointing out the flaw.
