I personally never leave my child in the car. If I am going somewhere, even for a second or minute or whatever. He is coming with me.
Just the way I am though.

People that leave their kids in their cars have their kids stolen... I don't care if its only for a minute and you can see them... because you can also see them being driven away by some abductor... and there you are standing helpless because you left your kid in the car..

All of us are potential 'victims', as are our children, in cars. Locked, unlocked, running, not running, whatever.
Gas stations are one of the common places where cars are stolen, with or without occupants.
Don'tknownuttin is absolutely correct. Seconds... is all it takes for disaster to happen.
I would hope that should you continue to leave your babies in a locked car while you took a few seconds to pay for your gas, that nothing happened, but, if it did? I'd hope that perhaps being charged would change your mind on ever doing it again.

Abductions-Kidnappings
Of non-family abductions, 32 percent take place on a street or in a car and 25 percent take place in a park or wooded area. The percentage of abducted children taken to another location totals 75 percent. These locations include: vehicle (45 percent), perpetrator's home (28 percent), building (13 percent) (Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, National Incidence Studies of Missing, Abducted, Runaway, and Thrownaway Children, October 2002)

Well, one thing that won't happen is them getting abducted from a parked, locked car at a gas station.

Hehe. Good one. :)
I'm not a fear monger. I want my kids to have a good childhood like I did, full of playing outside with their friends etc. BTW I'm originally from the West Island of Montreal, I would indeed bring my kids in every second if I lived in T.O. but where I am now it's wonderful, good people, safe, etc.

I think unless your kids are bigger and a little older to where they can possibly fight back if something bad was to happen, then no they shouldn't be left in a car alone even for a split second. Even with the door locked, if someone wanted in the car bad enough they'll find a way.

Well, if being big enough to fight back is a criteria then I shouldn't be alone in my car and I'm 38 years old.
Think about this. Most times I will pay at the pump when getting gas, but, the few occasions that I enter the store and leave my kids in the car I'm gone for 2 minutes tops. The car isn't left running, the doors are locked, I have a chip in my car that only allows it to be started with my key. I highly doubt that someone could get in to my locked car, find a way to hot wire it while fighting of my kids (because I know they'd fight, scream, kick and claw) in the 2 minutes that I'm gone, especially because I never take my eyes off the car for a minute, even while I'm in the store.
My kids are at their school all day, someone could come to the school during recess and take on of them, or they could be kidnapped while playing outside. Could something happen, yes, of course, but will it? Do I scare my kids, coddle my kids to the point where they are afraid to leave the house or afraid to be away from me for even a minute? If I do that am I really protecting them or damaging them for life?
At 10 and 6 I think it's perfectly okay to leave them in a locked car for 2 minutes with me watching.

Know your kids, know the area you live in, know the laws where you are, decide your comfort level (and that of your children), and go from there.
Parents often make decisions that others may not agree with or be comfortable with for their own children.
