The Southern Vampire Series by Charlaine Harris: First book "Dead Until Dark" (what HBO's True Blood is based on). Just finished the newest book in the series, the 9th. Wonderfully witty and clever. TV show not as good and they have taken liberties which I think doesn't enhance the story, but it is good for a watch. You most likely will come to love the heroine, Sooky Stackhouse. In this series, she is telepathic, except not with Vampires, so she finds it a rest to hang out with them, as they have come out in the open to live in society due to the manufacturing of 'true blood' for them to be able to survive. I promise, you will like it and not be disappointed. Read the books in order... the relationships et al, do develop.

Read the House of Night series. Its really really good its about "vampyres" but way different then twilight and it is really really good I am currently reading the series and I love it. My best friend recommended it to me.

If you want something like twilight I would read the true blood series. Yes it is a vampire book and I think it's a rip off twilight just mixed up a bit

I have to agree with iheartnyc... the House of Night series is about the best out there right now.I began reading the Twilight series because of the 'hype' but found it incredibly slow and I did read the whole series but as I can read a cereal box if I have nothing else handy... I did think all of the books were slow moving... maybe since she started writing writing at an early age, she continued the same writing pattern and technique rather than rewrite any...
But.. another good series is 'Night World' by L. J. Smith. Each book has 3 stories BUT all are intertwined as the reader will see. Very enjoyable and smooth flowing. I did read the 'Eragon' trilogy and was a little upset to find out that Chris Paolini did not do as he first said and keep this a true trilogy, leaving the 3rd without an ending but a path to a 4th book. He says the 'next installment' will be out 'when he finishes it'.
I read a wide variety the name of authors and subject matter. I also collect books from reference to craft magazines to fantasy, fiction/non-fiction and even though some I would not recommend to anyone, most I enjoy. Generally I get emails from readers who are looking for a particular book but do not know the author or title, so I try to track it down if they at least know the subject matter or any of the characters. It's very interesting to do and I find great reads that way.
