    OK, when I was about 10 YO, I built a workbench. Still have it.
    I put outlets the hard way. My bench is sit down with a masonite top. It has an upper shelf and a lower shelf and a control area.

    The outlets on the front of the bench are individually switched with duplex switches. There is some wiremold. When I leave the bench and throw all 4 switches off, the bench is off.

    There are drawbacks of putting them in the back and on the front. Soldering gun burns when routed on the top. My foot pulling stuff on the floor when mounted in the front.

    Balenger, cord reels do work well. Had that over a work table at work when using hand tools such as a jig saw etc.

    So, outlet placement depends on the outlets intended use.
