I'm seeing lots of questions regarding how to reverse a Hampton Bay ceiling fan that has no reverse switch on the main unit. You'll first want to get the phone number of the ACTUAL manufaturerfrom Home Depot (Hampton Bay is a Home Depot brand that is manufactured by different 3rd parties). The manufacturer for the Altura 68' is GP Warranty - 800.749.3267. On to the instructions and the HUGE caveat...

With the remote:
1) hit the Hi button
2) thit the Lo button
3) hold the reverse button until the fan starts turning the other way.

HUGE CAVEAT!!

THE FAN WILL NOT GO INTO REVERSE IF YOU HAVE IT ON A DIMMER SWITCH!!

As soon as I changed to tradition switch the fan responded to the button sequence (it would only slow down and then speed back up before).

Fan has to running in 'High' mode to reverse it. Just push 'Hi' button; wait for it to get up to speed and then press the 'Reverse' button. Should work then. We just purchased two of these fans for our living room. One works fine as above, but the other one will just toggle through the speeds but will not turn off nor go into reverse. When I called the manufacturer, King of Fans, they seemed to know immediately what the problem was, and said they'd send a replacement 'receiver' [the one in the motor unit]. Now we have to call out an electrician again because we don't have a ladder that will reach our 18 ft. ceiling to swap out the old one... sigh... wish these companies would do better quality control! Like verify everything works BEFORE they box it up and ship it!! Seems to be a common problem however... The other fan is great though, so if you can get it working it's a wonderful fan. Looks great and moves a lot of air!

1. You should not have a remote fan on a dimmer switch, period.

2. Hampton Bay has NO quality control. Stop buying them!

I had the same problem. I have a Hampton Bay fan with both an uplight and downlight with reverse that is only controlled by the remote. The ability to turn fan off and on would not work. So hubby ordered new sending unit. Once we replaced that, we could not reverse the fan for cooling, it only worked for the winter mode (pushing warm air down). I read on a post here, someone suggested trying to switch out the pink and yellow wires in the reverse module. We tried this and it worked beautifully! Thank you to whoever posted that advice!!

We also purchased a new Altura fan after we had purchased two larger 68" fans which worked beautifully. When the smaller Altura was installed, it wouldn't react to anything- no reverse, no high speed. We read this blog and saw that it won't work with a dimmer on the line (which we had due to a light that was on the same circuit. We changed the dimmer to a traditional switch and Voilà! It worked beautifully. My husband said it was not getting enough voltage. The Alturas are beautiful fans and move so much air and are so quiet! Glad this blog helped solve the problem.

I like the style and performance of my Altura fan, but after a short time it would not reverse for seasonal change. I tried everything above, dimmer switch (I don't have the light kit), the manual reverse then turn on technique, special button pushing sequences (this did work one time), etc. Eventually I ordered a new Capacitor/Reverse Module from King of Fans, which seems also to be part of G.P. Warranty, whose number is 800-749-3267. From what I can tell the part number for the Altura is J7067F-03/5.5 micro farad 400 VAC. This part is not hard to install, you only have to remove your light kit, if you have one, or the bottom cover. Be careful, the bottom cover will likely not turn in the slots when the screws are loosened, and you may have to take the screws out completely as I did. Replacing this part should solve the problem, as it did for me.

It seems to be true that Hampton Bay fans are of dubious quality and that reversing problems with this model are frequent. But, I already had the fan, liked the look, liked the performance in a 14' ceiling room, so I wanted to fix it. Had it all to do over again I might opt for a better fan, Big Fans, yes that is there real name, has some exceptionally nice, and expensive fans. If I ever need to replace the Altura, I will look there and elsewhere. Hampton Bay, like so many Chinese products, invariably have a part that goes south in an otherwise good unit! The Chinese version of quality control is outside the norm, at least for now and the near future.
