8. Clean transmission pan thoroughly with solvent (e.g. brake cleaner) and wipe dry, so there is no harmful residue. If there's a magnet, it should be cleaned and replaced in the same position in the pan. Clean transmission and transmission pan mating surfaces of all gasket material, being careful not to damage the surfaces. If the transmission didn't come with a drain plug, I recommend installing a B&M Transmission Drain Plug in the pan at this time. It makes subsequent changes a snap. Carefully choose a location for drilling a 1/2" hole for the plug. Some manufacturers emboss a "0" where the hole should be drilled. Install drain plug, nylon washer, nut, and torque to 20 ft.-lbs. Does the B&M Transmission plug have to be threaded after drilling 1/2" hole?

No. Here's the order: plug, washer, pan, inside nut. The washer seals everything perfectly. I've had one in my 2000 Taurus ATX pan for 6 years and it has never leaked a drop. Follow the directions that come with the plug and you won't have any problems.

John da. Kitch428 here talking at cha. I'm a Toyota master tech. I've been reading about your trans Q's and if there's any question about a drain plug, well Toyota put one there for you so don't worry about it. It's 14mm, and you'll need a new crush washer to button it up. Toyota likes the T-IV in there, but it's your truck and totally your call on what you want best for your truck.
I can see it's your baby and you want the best for it. I'm just here to tell you that it's been working fine whatever the factory called for it for the many years I've been working on them.

Kitch428--------- I want my truck to last as long as possible. It isn't used off road, but for mostly short runs. I know syn products are a hellava better then conventional. I already use mobil 1 motor oil.but nervous about syn in trans,and adding to power steering. I am possibly ready to try Amsoil syn products. Since you probably know my truck better then me,if you had it ,would you go 100% with syn??
