Heath what's a soapnut? Is it just a massive block of soap?

i found one site that sells them in the us. a 1kg bag is $40, which seems to about as cheap as you can get them, here. if i get this job, then i think i'll find a way to order them. it would completely eliminate the need to buy laundry soap, household cleaners, and maybe even soap and shampoo.
I'd like to get as low-impact and eco-friendly as possible. I'm living on my own for the first time, so this is as good a time as any to start. and, with cats, the fewer chemicals in my cleaners, the better.
Ouch they cost a lot in the USA compared to here! I did try using soap-nut solution for shampoo etc but it's very thin and I haven't found a good way to thicken it up. If you do want to go down the natural route here's a site that might give you some ideas. I'm afraid all the suppliers are in the Uk but if you pick up some tips you might find similar suppliers over the pond.

Do you have any health-food shop or herbalist type shops that might sell you a very small quantity of soapnuts and other things to try out? Some people love them and some hate them so it would be a shame to spend $40 if you don't like them.
If you want some specific ideas tell me your needs and I'll try to help, I don't want to bung up the whole thread with detailed instructions on every possilbe cleaning or toiletry situation and bore everyone silly lol.

Actually heath if you can't find anywhere to get your hands on a sample of soap-nuts to try, Pm me with an address I can send you some to. For obvious reasons you might not want to share your actual address, or name come to that, but just Pm me whatever name and address you want to use that they could get to you by and I'll post you a little bag. They weigh very little so I don't think the postage will break the bank even to the USA.
Unless there's some kind of USA law that prevents me sending them by post,or you would have to pay import tax or something silly?

the same site has the option to buy a sample bag of 5-6 nuts for $1. I might order a sample from them, and try to find some place cheaper to get the bulk quantity. That's just the site I found after searching for about 30 seconds.
it may very well be so much more because of import fees. I don't really know.
there aren't any health-food or herbalist stores in the county, at least not that would carry something like that. Even if I had a car, I'd probably have to drive 45-60 minutes to find one, and there's a good chance they wouldn't have soapnuts.
why not start a thread for homemade all-natural cleaning supplies. I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd be interested.

having never sent or received international mail, I have no idea what the regulations would be.
for all I know, super-sniffer drug dogs would sniff them out, think they're candy, and choke to death on one. OK, maybe not THAT! ^_^

Yeah I'd go with the sample first then. Sounds safer than me sending a sample to kill doggies with ><.
I'll think on your suggestion about the thread but right now it's 2am here so time to hit the hay. (Not literally, I might be a nature freak but I have a real bed lol).
Nighty night.

A real bed is on my list of things to buy when I have enough money. My 100% recycled bag-o-scrap-foam just isn't cutting it anymore.

Oh, final thought before I turn in heath. I chat on another forum with the lady that I buy soapnuts from in the UK. I'll pick her brains to see if she knows anyone who supplies cheaply to the USA. I'll get back to you. Now definitely night night.

I love how this guy handled his breakup.
A marine, stationed in Iraq, recently received a “dear John” letter from his girlfriend back home. It read as follows;
Dear Ricky,
I can no longer continue our relationship. The distance between us is just too great. I must admit that I have cheated on you twice since you’ve been gone, and it’s not fair to either one of us. I’m sorry. Please return the picture of me that I sent you.
Love, Becky
The marine was crushed, so he asked his fellow marines for any pictures they could spare of their girlfriends, sisters, ex-girlfriends, cousins, etc. In the addition to the picture of Becky, Ricky included all the other pictures of the pretty gals he had collected from his buddies.
There were 57 photos in that envelope, along with this note;
Dear Becky,
I’m so sorry, but I can’t quite remember who you are. Please take your picture out of the envelope and send the rest back to me.
Thanks, Ricky

You all know that I'm notorious for hijacking threads. I go off on a tangent, drag people with me, and before you know it we're entirely off topic.:o
Really, I don't mean to do it, it's just something I do, can't seem to control it.
I really am a bad girl, I have to go to KP's room. ;)
