    Issues with VLOOKUP
I have a column of randomly ordered stimuli names, corresponding to 16 different places, with 4 directions each

    1_ne
    13_sw
    8_sw
    11_se

    etc.

There are 64 total. Each correspond to a single number, 1-64, where:

    1_ne is 1
    1_nw is 2
    1_se is 3
    1_sw is 4
    2_ne is 5

    etc etc

All I want to do it use a lookup function to search this key array and return the corresponding number. I am using

    =VLOOKUP(C1,$G$1:$H$64,2)

Which I thought would work, but it is not always returning the correct number. For example, it returns "3" for 1_se and "12" for 3_sw and several others, but then also returns "4" for 11_ne and "63 for 9_sw.

What am I doing wrong? Is there a better way to approach this task?
