What are everyone's preferences when it comes to a prime lens? I think I'm going to go with a 35mm but can't quite make up my mind yet. It would be used mostly as a general purpose lens... no specialty photography.

For general photography a 50mm lens is the industry standard. 35mm is considered wide angle. Depending on the quality of the shots you want to take then get a multi lens like 28-70mm. Also if F stops are important check that before buying any lens.

Fstop is important and I like the tight upclose shots. In a lot of what I want to photograph I think itd be easier to get closer rather than pull back to get the shot I want.

Actually right now probably just a good general purpose prime lens is what I'm looking for. However, I would like to get into some landscape photography.

Then go with th 50mm. You can't go wrong. When you start on landscape photography then get yourself a good 28mm lens. With that combo you will be off to a great start.

If you have been using a zoom lens you can go through your photos from before and see where you are naturally shooting at e.g. I had a 24-70 and was tossing up between the same as you, but going through archives I realised my natural shot was 90% around the 50mm mark. So I went with 50.
