Sharing information on line
I've always been pretty careful about my identity but I got hooked on Facebook, posted photos, information, thought I had limited my circle to friends.
I guess a stranger slipped into the mix - yesterday I got a most upsetting message from someone on Facebook, upsetting to the point where I have cancelled my membership. It appears that that person used some sort of recognition software and bounced off this site.
Everyone has to decide what to do but I am simply reminding people to be careful - and there are some disturbed people out there.

We take a risk whenever we put anything online. I'm always very careful on this site and on any of the websites that I run as well as advertising that I do.
I do get the most personal on this website, but that's all. Even then, I'm very careful.
People need to remember that what you put online is a matter of choice. For me, I prefer not to splash all about my life all over the place. Some things are only for family and close, personal friends.
I'm sorry that happened to you, JudyKayTee! That's one of the reasons that I never choose to be a part of the social networking sites.
Everyday though, I do get probably a couple hundred of junk emails. They usually are automatically put into my quarantine folder. Part of the reason that I get them, is because I've chosen to put my email address out "there" for advertising my businesses.
Yes, people really do need to be careful with what they put on the Internet!
Thanks!

I'm sorry Judy. I've been a member of FB since it's inception and never had a problem. Guess I better go back and check my privacy settings.

My problem was some sort of photo recognization/comparison software AND I posted too much info AND I allowed someone to become my friend when I didn't recognize the name. All stupid and careless, all my fault.

Yes, that's necessary to successfully advertise and get business. I try to be as credible as possible. There is nothing in my ads that is details about my personal life, outside of the business that I try to get and my life as a professional musician.
My address is listed in my ads only when someone might need to bring me a piece of furniture to repair and/or refinish and when someone might want to take private music lessons.
For me, the advertising is all about getting business. The Internet is where I get most of my business.

Isn't there professional computer people who can find out who did this?

Are you referring to JudyKayTee's dilemma or what I wrote, Kitkat22?
Thanks!

I was wondering about computer experts. There are experts who could find out who did this to JudyKay! It makes me wonder about putting anything on my computer. I'm not on Facebook and have no desire to be. I think she's a class act and a very nice person. I detest people who like to cause other people pain!

The facial recognition software angle sounds odd to me, yes the software exists but I'm not sure how it can be used in this case. Adding internet-only friends is probably the biggest security risk matched by someone doing some research, setting up a fake account as one of your real life friends ("it's Bob from high school!") and getting you to friend them.
I only friend real life people and have my security settings looked after. Haven't had an issue.

The facial recognition software? No. If you aren't on social media sites posting a good amount of photos and filling out your profile filled with personal info then you are at a low risk. The biggest danger is social engineering. Though I do 80% of my work online my social activities are mainly all real life based. Facebook is only for keeping in touch with family, close real life friends and selected co-workers. Yes I have ignores a few friend requests. I don't Twitter at all, people can get my status updates via FB and I can control over who sees that.

One of the photos on my Facebook page is the same photo on AMHD (although I have removed both) and that seemed to be the connection. How does recognition software work?
And, yes, I did allow someone to become my "friend" when I had no idea who that person was.

Ah I see. If that person wasn't friended by you all they should see is that thumbnail, your networks and your friends listing... unless you opened up the privacy settings to allow all to view all.
You aren't the first nor will you be the last to be social networked. A good habit would be this: when you get a friend request immediately go to their FB profile. Likely you can only see what I mentioned above. If they have absolutely no other friends and no friends in common then beware!

I don't think it's recognition/data mining software, it's probably as simple as the person searched Facebook for a lawyer named Judy (I assume that's your name) living in New York who's pics match the ones on AMHD.
The rule of thumb is, if you don't know the person don't friend them. My local police department made a phony account and tried to friend all of the kids they wanted to keep tabs on. We caught on quickly when we saw a pattern in the sample of people they were requesting. I'm a small town boy.
