I'm a very pale girl and I really want a tan along with a new look for when I go back to school this fall. I always burn and barely tan. I've gotten my first ever tan line and it's going away. How can I get a tan with out killing my skin and with out really using a lot of money (no tanning salons!)

The healtiest and safest way to do it is with lotions. Neutrogena has a gradual tanning lotion! It's less than $10. It's fantastic!

Yeah, self-tanners are awesome! They work great for me, I usually use them in the winter when I'm really pale.
Depending on where you live you may be able to get a tan outside in the sun, as well.
