    Harassing creditors
I have been reading other answers to this question, and appreciate all the info I have read... I have a debt (bank loan) from over 8 years ago. Recently I have received new credit cards. I have also received a flood of phone calls from creditors. I know if I acknowledge the debt I am liable to restart the SOL. But is there something I can say to make them stop calling... i.e.. The statue is up, so stop bothering? I know they have the right to continue their collection, but I am receiving sometimes 10 or more phone calls a day, and they rarely leave a message. The 1 time I answered, they wanted me to give them personal information about where I live before they would even tell me what company they were from. Also, I live in Ontario.

Just a suggestion but you could write a carefully worded letter stating that you have no known debts that could be pursued in Ontario's courts and as such all collection activity should cease. Do NOT acknowledge the existence of any old debts in your letter since, as you correctly mentioned, it could restart the limitation period.

If the collection calls are being made by collection agencies (which are licensed and regulated) then you should complain to the Ministry of Government Services since the calls are excessive and probably constitute harassment (www.mgs.gov.on.ca).

Thanks Justice Matters. I will try that, and hope it works. Im not one to avoid my responsibilities, but I was young and stupid, and unfortunately unable to pay these old debts.
