    Birth control?
Ok so my mom is a doctor and when I asked her about birth control she said I don't need it.

Before I go on I would like to state that I am only 16 and I am a VIRGIN, and intend to stay that way... how do you know I mean that Because why would I lie to people on a help site, that defeats the purpose.

Ok so lately my periods have been so messed up. I went 3 months without a period then it came and lasted about 2 weeks then I went 2 months without a period then it came and lasted a week and a half then the next month I had my period twice... I get horrible cramps when on my period, so bad I almost wrecked the car last time it happened, and sometimes I get cramps and this dull ache when I am nowhere near a period. I was talking to one of my friends about it and she said that her doctor told her it was a good thing she had come in (after having lesser symptoms than me) because she could have gotten scarring along her uterus.

I talked to my friends about it and they said I can get birth control from a clinic without my parents knowing but I do NOT want to go behind my parents back. My sister had to go on birth control when she was my age and she was a virgin for another 4 years. I pointed that out to my mom and she said that birth control might mess with my depression, that it might not mesh well with my anti depressants... she says I have to double check with the psychiatrist before I can do that, but that means waiting another month... anybody have any advice?

Wait another month. Yes, it may be uncomfortable to wait but if you are on other meds, it does make a difference on IF birth control is right for you and if so, what kind. Like any drug, birth control can have side-effects which can be amplified by other medications.
It sounds weird, but the brand I took was counteracted with plain ole Vitamin C cough drops! So, considering your circumstances at least wait until you can talk to your psychiatrist... just to be safe. :)

Don't worry too much about what you heard with scarring along the uterus. That is a rare possibility and a case unique to her; not everyone would have a similar medical threat.

By the way, GOOD FOR YOU for being a virgin and an overall honest person. People like you are few and far between! :)

I would say that since your mother is a doctor, she would be very aware of drug interactions so you probably wouldn't want to take medicines that could give you even worse symptoms then what you are experiencing now. Maybe you could ask your mother is you could have an appointment with an OB/GYN just to get routinely checked out, since your cramps and periods are so irregular. Then your OB could prescribe you any medication you might need - such as birth control pills. I'd go about it this way, to make sure everything is legit and also so no harm comes to you.

What field of medicine is your mother?

Ethically speaking a doctor should not treat their own family because they cannot be objective enough. Opinion yes, treatment no.

Have you researched potential side effects and drug interactions with birth control pills?
Here is one example. And this is probably what your mom is really worried about.

Lo Ovral side effects (Norgestrel And Ethinyl Estradiol) and drug interactions - prescription drugs and medications at RxList

Have you had a gyn [ pap and pelvic ] exam to determine why you have painful and irregular perioids? Have this done first and ask them if birthcontrol pills are advisable for your condition.

I would not go behind your parent[s] back, be upfront and honest with them and they will trust you more.

Also, you are to be commended for your virginity and your commitment to stay that way. Remember any virgin can have sex and lose it. But no sexually active person can reclaim their virginity.

You should go see a doctor. One thing you may be getting is cyst's in your uterus. They are very painful and can cause severe damage. Some, very few, do get this and medical attention is needed. If this is causing it and you don't seek medical attention, you may end up not being able to produce children years later.

It may be best for you to go on the birth control just to get your period's more normal. I had very similar things happen when I was your age. My doctor put me on low dose birth control pills and it helped. I finally got normal periods. There were no side effects! I was on and off it when I got older, used to prevent myself from becoming pregnant. I never had any side effects, but every woman is different. This is something a doctor will discuss with you!

Birth control pills are not only used for preventing birth, they are also used to help a woman's body change. There is nothing wrong with taking them! It would also be good for if you were to ever have sex unexpectedly. I do applaud you for saving your virginity! Just save it for the right man! And still use a condom, even if you are on the pill!

Some times it is best to do things behind a parents back. I'm sure they would prefer to find out you used protection then have you come home telling them you're pregnant. It's your body, use it wisely!

Also, even though your mom is a doctor, it is illegal, in most places, for a doctor to treat a family member. The best thing for you to do is see a doctor. A gynecologist would be your best choice.

I strongly agree with Inthebox's opinion. I suggest that you see both gynecologist and an endocrinologist. The Gynecologist will check you of your structural problems if there is any and the Endocrinologist will check your hormones if there is any problem. Both specialists will determine the right treatment for you if necessary.
