    Traffic ticket for alien with working visa
    Hi everyone

    Last week I got a traffic ticket and policy officer charged me for two things
    - speeding 12 miles over the specified limit
    - no drivers license from Texas

    I don't have nothing to say regarding the speed limit, I don't know if I'm guilty or not but I'm interested in the second charge. Because I'm an alien I have a TN working visa (NAFTA) and I have to go every year back to renew it, so as I understand I'm not a resident. I have asked Drivers Public Safety (DPS) in Texas if I was eligible for a Texas drivers license, they told me I was not due my visa will expire in less than 6 months (I have to tell you I have not requested the drivers license before because I was not in Texas so I didn't need it). DPS told me I could drive in Texas with my license from Mexico and my International Permit which I showed them. The issue is that now I have to go to court or pay the ticket because the officer that stopped me apparently didn't know this. What should I do? Pay for the ticket or go to court and explain all this to the judge?

    Go to court and try and explain this to the judge. Be sure to bring along your valid license to show the court. You should also pay the speeding ticket and don't contest that.

    Go to court and pay the one, but plead not guilty to the drivers license.
    Your license from Mexico is valid, if it is valid and if you are not allowed by law to have a state license.
