Hi ,
I am an International Student from India on F1 with Non Resident Alient Status who got an state refund for 2004 in 2005 but haven't received 1099G from IRS. While filling form 1040NR-EZ Point #4 , do I need to write the amount I received as an refund.

No! Federal tax refunds are NOT taxable under any circumstances. You are getting your own money back when you get a refund.

Thanks for the quick Reply but I was actually asking about the State Refunds not the Federal.
Thanks a lot.

In publication 519 and 525 , it is quoted that if you apply for itemized dedcution , you need to include the state and , or local income tax in as your income for year when you received the refund. But since being an Indian Student on F1 with NR status ,I get the standard deduction instead of itemized deduction and thus don't need to quote state refund in 1040NR-EZ.Am I correct?.
Thanks Again.

Hi AtlantaTaxExpert,
I have a last questions to ask you.Previously I received a W2 from my company which had social security taxes withheld for which I was about to file 843 but now I got an W2 from my company as W2C rectifying that error and they going to pay the amount withheld previosuly. But the problem is that I already filed my taxes for 2005 and I was about to file 843.
The questions is do I need to file an amendment with the new W2C which doesn't shows the social security taxes withheld? If I need to do so what form should I use ?
Just for you information I am an International student on F1 Visa Indian Citizenship , Non - Resident Alien status.

You do not need to change anything on your income tax return. There is no accounting for Social Security and Medicare taxes on that return.
Effectively, you need to do nothing as long as you do not file the Form 843.

I got a 1099G from Arizona, what is it and what do I have to do with it?
Facts about me:
Single, no dependents, only salary income and interest from bank
Have been on h-1 from Jan 11, 2005.
Was on F1 from Dec 25 2000 to Jan 10,2005 [opt from Sep 20, 2004 to Jan 10, 2005]
I have only filed 1040NR-EZ so far [with standard deductions]
And am planning to file 1040 EZ for this year [for year ending dec31, 2005]
With 5000+3200 deductions.
Does 1099G have to do anything with state/federal return?
Any help is really appreciated.
Thanks
Vijay

Vijay:
Were you unemployed anytime during 2005? If so, did you receive unemployment benefits?
Form 1099-G is used to report state tax refunds and unemployment benefits to the IRS.
If you got a state tax refund from Arizona last year (most likely scenario), you can ignore the Form 1099-G because you did not itemize last year and hence did not claim your withheld Arizona state income taxes as an itemized deduction.
If you got unemployment benefits, however, they have to be reported on your 2005 tax return.
