There are few volume controls on XP, but you need to make certain that either RealPlayer or MediaPlayer, or whatever player you have, has the volume turned up all the way before you move up the volume control from the taskbar. It may be simply that the "saved" volume level was too low.

Double click on the speaker next to the clock to get to Master Volume, make sure that WAV is not muted or volume is low

Unmute or move slider up for wav and master and then check out your sounds again

Start/control panel/sound and audio devices/under sounds tab, you can look for 'start windows', and see if it has a sound(speaker). If not, choose one through the 'browse'. You can 'save as' to save the sounds you choose.
