    Ny taxes in nj
I can't figure out how to prepare my daughter's nj state taxes.they go to school during the year and worked in ny city during the summer.I've read the non-resident nj tax booklet but I still can't figure it out.for context I was able to complete their federal taxes in less than one hour. Can anyone help me with this one?

Need more information. What state do you live in? Where did your daughter live while working in NYC?

In general a child who normally lives with her parents in one state but goes to school in another is considered a resident of the parent's state. But if your daughter lived in NYC while working there overth sumer then she would be a patr-year resident of NYC and a part-year resident of your home state. However, if she had a job in NJ while going to school there oit can get a little more complicated.

So your daughter is a full year NJ resident, since that's where she lived. She will have to file New York's non-resident income tax, which is their form IT-203, as well as the normal NJ resident tax form, NJ-1040. She should end up owing NJ little or nothing, since her wages are taxed first by NY, and NJ gives a credit for taxes paid to other jurisdictions. Hope this helps.
