    Claiming dependent for 2007 taxes
    Hi,

I read several queries on this topic, but none really match my situation. I am a US Citizen and my parents visited me for three months in 2007. I spent over $30,000 in mom's healthcare/diagnosis here in the U.S. They do not have an income in India. Is there any possibility for me to claim her as a dependent on my 2007 filing?

She came on a B1/B2 visa. She does not have an ITIN. Do you need to get one? If so, can it be done in time to meet the April 15 filing deadline?

Thank you in advance for all your helpful comments.

They would need to be citizens or residents.

Thank you. But I had also heard of folks getting an ITIN number for alien visitors, and using that to file a W-7? So I assume you are suggesting that is not appropriate?
