Do I need to pay/file nys tax
Hi, I was a student in New York state for 1 semester in 2004 with no income from New York state.. But I moved to Austin TX for a job and worked there until end of 2004. And move back to New York on 2005, for such reason I didn't file for New york state tax..
But now, I am receiving a mail from the New york state Tax department asking me why I didn't file for the TAX.. what kind of reason should I give them.. I am kind of confused now.. Please help. should I need to file it as full time new yorker, or part time?thanks..

They obviously have some type of audit trail that shows you made money in 2004.

That is why they are querying you about it.

Call the NY state tax department and ask them to send you a copy of your NY state tax script. That way, you will have some idea as to WHY they are asking for a tax return.

The tax script is a copy of what they have on record tax-wise for you in NY state. It is organized by tax year.
