FICA and Old Age Surv Disability Ins Taxes for F-1 Student
    Hello all,

I am currently on F-1 Visa doing my Masters. I started in Fall 2006. This is my last semester and I have registered for 0 credit hours this semester. I am Indian by citizenship.

I work as research assistant on-campus. I observed that in my last two pay-checks, they have deducted around 6% taxes as Old Age survival Disability Ins and roughly 1.5% as FICA MediCare.

After reading a little about such taxes, it seems you are exempted from such taxes if you are a non-resident alien or have registered for 6 or more credit hours? Am I correct?

Should I email HR about this? Am I liable to pay that tax? Please guide me.

    Thanks

    Jimish

    Jimish:

You are EXEMPT from the 6.2% Social Security tax and 1.45% Medicare tax due to your F-1 visa status. Contact HR and get them to refund the tax.
