I would back up anything I wanted to save, and do a system recovery on it.
This will reset your system back to "new out of box" condition and would solve your problem.
I'm sure there are other ways, but his would be the most quick and most likely to solve it.
Good Luck!

thanks so much but I ended up finding a solution with out having to resort to that, just can't remember who or where I found it
but.. this is it
Start menu
Type "command" in the search box
Then right click on "Command Prompt" as is now shown above in the menu
and select "Run as Administrator"
In the command window type
assoc .zip=CompressedFolder
That will restore .zip files to their original Windows Explorer
associations."
it DOES work
thanks whoever found this for me!

ZIP FILE ASSOCIATIONS
Vista like XP it has a weak unzip wizard built into Explorer.exe, if you wanted any functionality you needed to install a third party application like IZarc. However if you want to use the one that comes with Vista you have to re-associate the .Zip file format to point to Explorer.exe.
1. Open the Start Menu
2. Go to All Programs
3. Expand the Accessories Folder
4. Right Click Command Prompt
5. Select Run as Administrator
Windows Vista will ask you if you were sure that you wanted to open the command prompt as an administrator, say yes. Now from there type:
cmd /c assoc .zip=CompressedFolder
