    Working while waiting for my immigration interview
    Hi, I'm italian and I married my fiancé (us citizen) 2 years ago when I came on holidays to US. Immigration misplaced all my paperwork, including birth certificate, medical examinations and money orders so I had to resend everything and finally, AFTER 2 YEARS I got my interview for April 2008. The problem is that I had to look for a job to help my husband to pay the bills and I know I wasn't supposed to do that without my working permit. Now Im scared that if they find out during the interview they could deport me and being away from my husband will break my heart.

    My boss was aware of my situation and we thought I would get my SSN sooner. I was paying taxes during this 8 months. I don't know what to do or to say during my interview, Is there any way I could get away with that? Should I just NOT MENTION that I worked?

    Please help!

    You have to mention that you work cause if you don't they'll catch you in a lie because you have paid taxes so do what ever feels right for you

    The best thing is to call a lawyer. They usually give free advice over the phone if you explain your situation briefly.

    My wife and I were in the exact situation you and your husband are in. Your employment in the US is forgiven due to the fact you are married to an American citizen. Having said that.. your employer could suffer due to the fact there is no legal way you could have provided employment eligibilty documentation.
    The fact that you are providing to an American household and the American economy should bode well with your interviewer. As long as you have nothing to hide and are COMPLETELY honest your nightmare a.k.a. immigration process will be over eventually.

    Normally when you submit I-485 to adjust your status, it's always advised that you should file I-765 (work permit) and I-131 (travel document) concurrently. You will received work permit within 90 days and with this document, you are eligible to obtain SSN and driver's license while waiting for your green card.

    The fact that you work should not be a problem as long as you enter marriage in good faith. Just don't lie at the interview or in papers. If you already had an interview, you should receive your green card in 3-4 weeks. Good luck.
