Kenmore dishwasher motor won't pump water out
Model Number: 587.1550590 Age: More than 10 years

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have an older Kenmore dishwasher circa 1992. At the start of the wash cycle, the pump should start to pump out any left over water from before. But now I just hear a humming sound and then a click, like a relay shut something off. No circuit breakers have popped at the service panel. I can advance the timer knob to where it will allow hot water to come in, but the motor/pump won't kick in at the start of the cycle. Motor problem? Internal circuit overload? Something hung up in the pump keeping the motor/pump from going? Time for a new washer? But the old ones seem to last much longer than the new ones...
    Thanks

I wish I could tell you what is wrong with your dishwasher -- If the motor is the problem it
May cost $200 and is not that easy a task

It may be easier to pull dishwasher and do some testing and repair in a garage or basement
-- kitchen is not good place to tackle this - down low and awkward to work with

Thanks, Biggsie. Yeh, I was looking into the breakdown process. Will need to pull the unit out from under the sink and definitely work outside. How can I check to see if the motor turns by hand, or do I need to take parts off from inside the washer unit itself? Would the solenoid be an issue? I don't have a flow diagram on steps to take for diagnostics.
    Thanks

    Check for blocked drain hose.

I'll check it tonight, but the motor won't even turn on. I'd think I'd get something going but no water coming out. Maybe something is blocking the motor rotors and holding the motor back. I'll pop the hose off and check for blockage in the motor output spicket. It would be nice if it turned out to be just that.

Well I started taking the unit apart and found a remnant of some plastic wrapper inside the upper impeller. Some wrapper must have gotten inside, as the impellor wouldn't turn at first until I put a socket wrench to it and it turned with a little effort. I usually check for ANY food or other stuff before putting things in the washer. This must have slipped by. I'll take the unit apart further tomorrow to see if there's anything else inside.
    Thanks for the help.

@ 2000 GE potscrubber It will fill with water, and drain, but it hums like an electrical motor is stuck, and no water pressure is making it to the rotator bar. Is there a pressure pump that may have failed? It appears to do everything, but spray water. Any ideas welcome. TIA Alex
