My dog and laptop were in the backseat of car together and he chewed through the cord that plugs laptop to electrical outlet. Am I out money or can I just patch it with electrical tape and use? Don't want to start a fire. BAD DOG! :eek:

Many of the laptop adapters come with a detachable power cord. You can just get that.

Patching the cord depends on the damage and your skills. Electrical tape never holds up unless it's the expensive kind "Silicon Self fusing electrical tape" about $20 a roll.

Post a picture using go advanced. Show the adapter and the chewed section.

No clue how to do that. I'm in category "beginners" had the dog 8 years, the laptop 2 months. It's an adapter changing 110 to 16volt and he chewed through the smaller 16 volt wire about as thick as a telephone wire

That side is much harder to repair because the inner wire is surrounded by a outer shield and it can easily short.

Rest assured, the power supply just might get a little warm, but it's not a sparking hazzard. A new power supply can set you back $100.

The aftermarket supplies made by www.igo.com and sold by Radio Shack can offer benefits worth considering. The ability to operate on 120 V and 12 V (The car) and with a separate adapter, the same supply can charge a cell phone. You select tips for your laptop which will "dial in" the proper voltage for your laptop.

They are a little more expensive, but when you buy another laptop, in most cases you will be able to use the adapter by getting another tip.

Try asking a computer store to see if they can fix it for you. If it is between the plug and the box they can because me dog did the same thing. It could run you 20 to 30 Dollars. But again I don't know what damage that was done.

Thanks everyone! I patched it I'm using it now... I guess my concern is if it works when I plug it back in, is there any possibility a patched wire running at maybe slightly lower voltage could damage my computer?

It's either ging to work or not work. The power supply will shut down or become warmer than usual with it unconnected to the laptop but plugged in.
