First maybe start whatching them, or walking them. It proves you are responsible. Or ask to "borrow" a friends or families dog, there is a lot of work in owning a dog, but it is worth it. So act responsible and say(and do) all the things, walking, brushing, feeding etc.

Consider getting an older dog, and possibly a larger one. No offense, but no matter what you say now, you aren't the one who is going to be doing the housebreaking and other training that a puppy needs. If you work with a rescue agency, you can get a nice adult (or later-stage puppy... say 8 months or so) that has already learned a lot of the basics, which will be less work for your parents. And a general rule is that the smaller the dog, the more exercise it will need. So unless your family is already out doing a lot of physical activity (walks, runs, bike riding, playing tag, etc.) a dog that doesn't have a lot of excess energy to burn might be a better choice.

Google 'choosing a dog breed' or something similar. There are many sites which can help determine the right breed for by asking questions like: where do you live, what are your hobbies, do you travel, and so on. Once the type of dog is narrowed down a bit, research the breeds on the internet or by reading books - also read books about dog training.
Your dedication to the research may convince your parents that you'll be dedicated to the dog.
Also the previous comments about walking or caring for neighbors' dogs is a great way to show your parents that you are serious and are willing to take action.
This is how my daughter convinced me... and our 4 year old Brittany Spaniel has been a great addition to the family!
Good luck.

Considering an older dog or a not brand new puppy would be the best for you. Shelters are full of dogs that need a good home. I was in the same position as you when I was 8 years old (29years ago). My parents weren't convinced that I would take the dog for walks etc. How did I convince them. I saved my money, every penny, birthday money, christmas money etc. When I was eleven I had $300 saved, I showed my parents and asked if I could use the money to buy a dog. That's when they saw that I was serious. My dog Silver lived for 18 years. Good luck to you.

Hi, Go to Small Paws Rescue, they rescue Bichon Frise's, I got one for my daughter when she was 8 and he has been the best little guy. He was 9 months old, totally potty trained, never chewed on anything, neutered, totally mellow. Nice size to, 9 lbs when he came to us. He is now 16 lbs and 7 yrs old. The only thing with Bichons is they need grooming because they don't shed. But they are so soft. Also, go to Petfinder.com, they have pets of all sizes, and types. You could foster a dog too. That way you can find out if that is really what you want, and it gives the dog a good place to live until he can be adopted.
