I need to know if we can terminate our apartment lease
We moved into an apartment about 3 months ago. It was recently redone. It has a stove top built into the counter and an oven built into the wall. Neither have worked since we moved in. I keep on smelling gas coming from the stove. There is no shut off valve under them. We've brought it to the attention of the landlord a month and half ago and we still can't use them. We're cooking with a microwave, electric griddle, and a toaster oven. The bathroom sink hasn't worked since we moved in too. I poured drano in it and nothing happened. I told the landlord about it and he poured drano in it too and still nothing. We don't use it because it doesn't drain. It fills up with water that is often times yellow and full of hair and other stuff. Would we be able to get out of our year lease because nothing is being done to fix this?

Call the gas company and they will come and check it out. If they red tag it tell them the problem and ask what to do about the landlord not doing anything they should tell you what steps to take from there.
If you go through everything and nothing is done take it to the district court

If the gas company orders the gas shut off, then the code department will most likley not allow the home to be occupied. But you will have to document everything.

The very first thing you have to do is call the gas company to come out and make sure there is no gas leak.

Next, write a letter to your landlord. Send 2 copies, one by regular mail and one by certified mail, return receipt requested. In the letter inform them of all of the problems. Then say that you brought this to their attention at least 6 weeks ago and nothing has been done. Finally, tell them that if these things are not repaired within 5 days from their receipt of the letter that you will have no choice but to find a new place to live, since these problems have made the apartment uninhabitable.

Start building up your paper. Because if the landlord doesn't repair these things right away then you'll have to move. If/when the landlord sues you for breaking the lease you'll have something to show a judge.

Take some pictures of the sink that doesn't drain. Judges love pictures.
