If they are his kids you should just be able to say here are your kids and work out whatever you agree on. People usually need a Judge if there is a problem with working it out, you don't get along or you simply can't come to an agreement.

Legal temp custody can only be done though the courts, also with temporary custody, latter he can look for full custody after enough time.

Unofficially, you can agree with him, let the kids to to his home and let him watch them.

It would be wise to get legal advice or have lawyers present on issues as this one something in writing, for your protection and sanity... I would suggest or think it is best to come up with some terms and have it viewed by a lawyer perhaps signed and notarize so that you don't make any mistakes... Trust me, for your own protection.. something that will make you feel comfortable, stating travels, etc.. etc... I know you don't want to get lawyers or court involved.. but be wise... he can breech this verbal agreement at anytime and you may have no evidence to plead your side... Trust me been there done that.

Yeah if you don't have a good relationship he could try and pull something so it also depends how you get along somewhat.

The simple answer is you cant. You both will need to protect yourselves and the child / children. Now in a lot of states you don't have to have a lawyer to go to court so long as you pay the fees. But really you need to get a courts stamp of approval on this at a minimum.
