My big dog has hip problems
My male lab/mix dog weighs about 130lbs. I think he is mixed with a large Pointer. He was x-rayed 5 years ago and had bad hip dysplasia in one hip. He is now having trouble getting up. I was told if and when he could no longer get up I needed to have him put down. Is there any supplements I can give him to prolong his life and can I give him asprin every night? He was adopted and about 10 years old.

Have you tried giving him glucosamine and calcium supplements? I myself have a hip problem, and have also had a dog with a hip problem. Those supplements can be really helpful for both dogs and people. My vet told me to put those into his daily diet. Check with your vet for the right doses first though.

Also, and this seemed to help me tremendously, and seemed to help my dog also. Have you heard of Goji Juice? Add a few capfuls to your dogs water everyday. The Goji berry has a whole array of vitamins that are very beneficial for your dog... and you! You can find the Goji juice at health food stores (do some research to make sure you are getting the best) or you can go to a site where I actually buy mine. FreeLife.com - Welcome I'm not promoting it... I just find that to be the best, although a little expensive.

Hope this helps your dog a bit! :)

My big girl has hip dysplasia as well. It's heart breaking to watch. Her vet has her on a pain pill each day, and while it helps, its not 100%. Something I am going to look into, because a friend told me is flax seed oil in their dog food. Now.. I have not spoken to my vet about this yet, or done ANY research so I don't advise doing it unless you speak with your own vet first. That being said, my friend said it made a HUGE difference with her dog. As I learn more I will keep you posted.

Midrid... you really need to check with the vet on giving your dog asprin... he will be able to give you the proper amount. In humans it causes the blood to be thinner and sometimes stomach problemsso it may cause this in your dog if given too much. This is not something I would tackle on my own. The Glucosamine Chrondrition I take and have not had any problems as a result. I have also met other pet owners that give them to their dogs. Good luck

If the dog has not been to the vet lately, he needs to go. THere are some new and very effective pain medications available for dogs, along with some of the supplements mentioned above. Glucosamine and Chondroitin are generally fine, although I am not familiar with the others. The vet will probably want to run some blood work to make sure there are no liver or kidney problems before deciding what medicine and what dose to give.
