States don't accept high school diplomas, they award them. Or at least they accredit the institutions that do. If the online program you're speaking of is accredited by your state then the diploma received after completing the course of study will be a legal, valid diploma in the eyes of your state. Of course, that doesn't mean that an employer or post-secondary institution will accept it ; ultimately, that's up to them whether to accept it or not.
