My dog will not eat dog food
Our little dog (5 lbs) mix breed was a horded dog when we got him from humane society. He does not eat dog food wet or dry we have tried many many kinds. He does eat the cat food that is left on the plate from the cat, but not always. Of course he eats what we are having and the Wagon Train dried chicken breast we buy at Walmart. We have tried not feeding him from the table and did not give him the treats for several days, but he still will not eat the dog food we leave out for him. What do we do next?

Do not let him eat the cat's food whatever you do as this diet will harm his health in the long run. Seeing as he's not that big and likes people food have you thought about making up some "doggy people food" especially for him and keeping it in the fridge? You can make up an entire week's worth of people food for him and keep daily portions in separate plastic containers for him. It will probably be less hassle for you to get him to eat thinking he's eating real people food.

I agree with twinkiedooter, there are tons of recipes for dogs on the internet or you could go to your local bookstore, many have recipe books for dogs. Although it's definitely easier to just dish out dog food, it is healthier to make homemade dog food for your pet, as you know exactly what's in it. We give our dogs green beans because the oldest (almost 13 years) has epilepsy and the vet told us green beans would help stop his seizures, he hasn't had one in around 5 years so I guess it works.

My vet told me to give my dog, chicken, green beans and brown rice. My dog has been sick and he won't eat his regular dog food and she said, if he won't eat the dog food make your own. My dog doesn't like rice, so I just give him the chicken and the vegetable, you can also give them peas or corn. My dog loves it!

According to Dr.David Brunner and Sam Stall snacks should compose no more than 10% of a dog's daily caloric intake. Appropriate snacks include: air popped popcorn without butter or salt, broccoli, cooked green beans and raw carrots. The following snacks are unhealthy and possibly even fatal to dogs: table scraps (too fatty) bones, cat food, chocolate, onions, and milk. You can give him chicken and rice. All the advices are great. He is a lucky dog, he found a home. I love all sorts or animals.

It is very difficult to make sure a dog is getting the complete and balanced diet it needs other than by feeding a comercial dog chow. All you need to do to get it eating the dry dog chow that would be best for it is in the sticky at https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/dogs/i...tml#post254171

It may be different from some of the advice here, but here is a link to the AVMA's position on feeding other than dog chow, http://www.avma.org/onlnews/javma/jan05/050115ww.asp

Cat food is formulated totally different that dog food, it is esp higher in protein which can be hard on a dog's kidneys, try not to let him eat it.

You can try soaking his food in a small amount of warm water to get it mushy, the warm water makes it smell stronger. This is how we got our rescued doby to eat.

A lot of times dogs are spoiled in my opinion and they know they can hold out till you give them what they want to eat, most healthy dogs will not starve themselves to death simply waiting for a scrap. Consult your vet office on this, they will have lots of good advice.

You should have a vet check his dental condition too, chihuahuas are very prone to dental disease which can definitely alter the way he eats and what he is willing to eat. A good dental cleaning although pricy can add years of life and make your dog feel like a million bucks.

If your dog will not eat anything, he/she needs to be seen by a vet.

NEVER give a dog popcorn. That should be on the other list of possible fatal things. Hard bones are fine. Mostly steak bones,. marrow bones etc. Nothing that easily spinters like chicken bones, as they can puncture the intestines. Garlic, unless in very small ammts can be harmful also.

You might want to take a look at this site. I use it all of the time for questions that I have about my dog. There is a lot of good info, including tips and things to do when your dog won't eat his own food. Making your own is a very good idea too. There are a ton of good recipes if you just Google "dog food recipes"
