Getting a Social Security Number for a Child

Many people find that they need Social Security numbers for their children to file taxes. This message tells you how to get a Social Security number for a child. Have a pencil and paper handy.

To get a Social Security number for a child, you must fill out an application form and provide documents that show your child's age, citizenship and who you are.

You can get a Social Security number application form by mail by calling 1-800-772-1213 between the hours of 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM. That number again is 1-800-772-1213. The best times to get through without a long wait are between 7:00 and 9:00 AM and between 4:00 and 7:00 PM. You can follow the directions on the form after you receive it and mail all the required documents, but that process can take many weeks.

The most quick way to get a Social Security number for a child is to visit the nearest Social Security office and bring the necessary documents with you. You can find out where the nearest Social Security office is located by looking in the blue government pages of the phone book under U.S. Government and then Social Security. Minnesota offices are located in Alexandria, Austin, Bemidji, Brooklyn Center, Duluth, Fairmont, Hibbing, Mankato, Marshall, Minneapolis, Rochester, St. Cloud, St. Paul and Winona.

What documents does the Social Security office need to see in addition to the application form? For a child older than 6, they will need to see the child's birth certificate or baptismal record AND some form of identity such as a school record, medical record or driver's license. If the child is under age 6, the Social Security office will need the child's birth or baptismal record AND proof of identity of the person who is applying for the child. Some examples of identity documents are driver's license, ID card, passport or medical records.

One very important thing to remember is that the Social Security office needs to see original documents or certified copies. They will not accept photocopies

Not sure your finicial situation, But since there is a mandate requirement for children to go to school, the Government has a requireemnt to admit a child.

And a social security number was never designed to be used legally as a form of identification, it is often used for that, but I believe a legal argument could be made that the school system can not require you to have, if you have the money I would love to see you hire an attorney to challenge this.

Libydel, just curious, but is this a catholic separate school you are enrolling your child in or a school where at least one parent has to be catholic. Because here in Canada a child can't go to a catholic school unless one parent is catholic. It is a separate school board from the regular Board of Education and not governed the same way.

Try to get the SSN. If you cannot, your situation falls into the exception list for submitting Form W-7 to get an ITIN without filing a ax return.

You WILL need a memo or letter from the school.
