Unless your VPN connection restricts local LAN access, you are connected to two networks at the same time while on a VPN connection. You should be able to open a document on one network and print it on the other. When you open a document, web site, etc. it is your computer that is performing the work. So it is your computer that will handle the print job therefore, your printers will be available to you.

If you are using an application hosting program such as Citrix, then you may not be able to do this. Your computer is no longer hosting the application, it is just receiving keystroke, mouse and video information. There are options for allowing local devices to work such as printers but your VPN host may have these options turned off.
