My sick sassy won't take her medicine!
Thank You in advance for your speedy answers, this is my first post!

I have a five year old rotty named Sassy. She has begun acting depressed and lethargic as well as not eating. We took her to the vet and the bloodwork showed her platlet level was a 7 ( normal is about 150-300). This is along with a cut in her mouth making her sensitive. For the first day she seemed to respond to the antibiotics and the steroids but then yesterday she vomited all over the house. I now cannot get her to eat anything nor take her pills. Any advice?

P.S. I have tried soft food and treats, she took them at first but now refuses.

I never liked doing this way, but putting the pill deep in the mouth and holding the mouth shut worked for me.

Eventually, the dog just took the pill by dropping it it's mouth from about 2 feet. It had to have the thyroid pill for the rest of it's life.

The Britenny Spaniel that I had was an exceptional dog. Never growled at me. Only growled when playing. Barked at strange sounds and the doorbel.

My problem is that with the cut in her mouth she isn't to nice about people messing with it. Plus, I tried just putting it in right around her teeth and she just worked at it until it came out again.

Here's an idea: place the pill in an empty capsule shell

Capsuline® | Where Innovation Is Our Priority

They are rather benign and it should not irritate the cut on the tongue. I've used capsules similar to these in the past. I just noted that they come flavored.

Ask the vet if you can use ST-37 (An antiseptic for the mouth) on a cottonball for the cut on the tongue.

The pill has to be placed at the back of the tongue for the dog to swallow it.

The vomiting concerns me. Call your vet to see if he can put her on something to settle her stomach (steroids and some antibiotics are pretty rough on the stomach) Also he needs to know what is going on.

So I called the vet and apparently since she had not eaten in a few days, the pills were making her sick! His advice, pepcid AC. As soon as I got her to take some of that (pretty much back of the throat until she finally swallowed it) she started doing much better and is eating again. Thanks for your help!!
