    Are there alerts
My mom is hard of hearing, so she needs to be alerted when her computer makes a sound is there something that she can do?

When the computer makes what kind of sound? Most programs will pop to the top of your windows stack if they need your attention.

The answer to that question depends on the Windows version and the specific application in question. XP and Vista have Accessibility options in the Accessories on the start button.

Some programs can flash their task on the task bar.

Does it make sound now, just not loud enough?
Turn the volume up - right click on little speaker next to the time and you should be able to turn the volume up there
