Renovating bathroom and purchased Toto Drake toilet, with 12" rough cut. Contractor repositioned flange to 12" from the baseboard (not the finished wall). The basboard extends an additional 1/2" from the finished wall. Mounted the toilet and now have a space of approximately 2 1/2" between the tank and wall. The problem now is that, even if we use an offset flange and move the toilet back 1/2", the toilet's pedestal will sit against the baseboard but but the tank will still be 2" from the wall, leaving an unacceptably large gap. Any ideas?

I'm confused. The numbers don't add up. You have a 12" rough toilet. The contractor set the flange at 12" TO THE CENTER OF THE FLANGE from the plate,(so far-so good!). The base board cuts that 12 inches down to 11 1/2. By my figures the toilet should be setting next the wall. The only way you could set 2" out from the wall is if the plumber took his flange measure to the end nearest the wall instead of the center. If this is so the contractor should be called back and the toilet set correctly under the homes warranty.
This was his mistake and should be corrected at no cost to you. Good luck and please keep me imformed. Tom

Hey, just another perspective to offer... ptflynn... If you can confirm what Tom has said then there is something wrong for sure. BUT, I have installed a few toto toilets in my time and I am noticing that they do not always rough in tight to the wall nowadays... like they used to... let me explain:

A properly roughed toilet should measure 12 inches from the wall (not baseboard)to the center of the toilet flange. Now, if plumber roughed it in at 12" off baseboard then your measure from the wall would be between 12.5 and 12.75 ( wood baseboard is usually between .5" and .75" deep).

My point here is that if you measure from the wall to the bolts on the toilet (probably caps on toilet now covering screws, so just measure to center of caps) and it is anywhere between 12.5 and 12.75 (OR LESS) then your plumber has done his job and ALTHOUGH HE HAS MISRUFFED BY WHAT I WILL CALL BETWEEN .5 AND .75 INCHES... THE TOTO TOILET IS THE MAJOR CULPRIT.

See if all above is true.. you said toilet tank is 2.5" off wall.. then maybe your plumber is responsible for an error of .5 or .75 inches off the wall... and that is not great... but it does not account for the other 1.75 or 2 inches off the wall that is presented. Again, that is only if the toilet measures off the finished wall to the center of the toilet caps between 12.5 and 12.75 inches.

A few of the toto toilets out there simply are not roughing in tight to the wall anymore. Anyway.. check this out AND check Tom's ideas out as well.. I mean if you measure from the finished wall to the center of the toilet caps and arrive at say 14".. well then that is certainly a screw up and needs to be addressed.
